The Graveyard Book is a series of stories about a boy who escaped the murder of his family as a toddler and was subsequently raised by the ghosts of an old graveyard nearby. The book follows this boy–Nobody Owens–throughout his childhood, from infant to young adulthood, while he learns to live both within and outside of the graveyard walls. Outside of those walls lies the ever present danger of Jack, the man who killed his family, and who is always trying to find him.

Although Amazon states “ages 8 an up,” this won’t be an easy read for everyone–the diction is sometimes advanced for a YA book, and much of the dialogue has hints of Victorian English. The Graveyard Book is somewhat dark, but this darkness is seen through the innocence of a child, which makes it relatable to most anyone with the reading stamina for it; luckily, it’s a book that is hard to put down.
