Charley is a 15-year-old boy growing up in Minnesota during the Civil War time. He sees all of the ribbons, parades, and posters and wants so badly to be a part of the war. Charley lies about his age to become a soldier in for the North. He loves all the attention he gets from girls and being a part of the parades and so on. Then he is introduced to battle and Charley begins to regret wanting to do anything with battle and war.

Do you have those students who don’t really care about school because all they wanted do was be in the military? Gary Paulsen does an excellent job describing what battles and war can really mean. This book could be a great wake up call for those boys in your class. It is graphic, a little gory and easy to relate to as Charley is 15 and from Minnesota.
