Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow is told from the perspective of 15-year-old Doria who is being raised by her Moroccan-born mother in a suburban Parisian housing project. Her father abandoned them for another woman and family; Doria blames this on herself since she is not the son her father wanted. Doria recognizes the injustice and racism that surrounds her as a poor immigrant; she works through her anger and disillusionment as she tries to build a life for herself without being given much opportunity to do so, as her mom does the same. Doria’s honest insights are at times cynical and other times hopeful.
This book is for those who are interested in the perspective of a first-generation immigrant family. The seriousness is balanced by Doria’s smart comments and insights, making it a quick read.
