There is a new girl in school – a former homeschool student who refers to herself as Stargirl, serenades her classmates on their birthday with her ukelele, totes around her pet rat, and dresses in unusual clothes.  She wins the hearts of her classmates, especially the narrator Leo, by her charm and enthusiasm.  But, it doesn’t take long for Stargirl’s originality to quickly become threatening and for everyone to just wish she would be “normal.”

This book would be great for middle school students. It’s fast paced and funny while telling a simple love story and teaching a good lesson on being original.

Donald Zinkoff is no ordinary kid.  From his first day of kindergarten up to middle school, no one can quite understand him.  He loves school, laughs at the wrong times in class, trips over his own feet, and is picked last to play.  Nonetheless, Donald maintains his uniqueness and enthusiasm for life despite the opposition he faces from his peers throughout the years.

This book is great for anyone looking for a humorous and heart-warming read.  Donald is a character that youth may especially be able to relate to and teaches an important lesson about being true to yourself.
