Stanley Yelnats is a 15-year-old boy forced to go to Camp Green Lake to dig holes after he is caught allegedly stealing a pair of shoes from a celebrity. While there, Stanley discovers that he and the fellow prisoners at the camp are not just digging holes for rehabilitation. The Warden is looking something important in the desert and what she is looking for is somehow linked to Stanley’s past.
This is a great book for middle schoolers. The story is written simply but there is complexity and mystery in the story that make it interesting and fast to read. The plot was somewhat hard to follow for my ELs but other students found it very enjoyable.
