Garnet is sixteen years old and has been sent to Excelsior, Minnesota for the summer in 1926 to live with distant, snobby relatives. Her father is emotionally distant and her mother wants her to marry well and be financially secure. Garnet’s real passion is birds, which she longs to study at university instead of settling down with a husband and children. After getting a job in a hat shop, Garnet meets the stunning flapper girl, Isabella and they begin a hidden relationship. Ultimately, Garnet must choose between following her passions and fulfilling her duties to her family.
This book uses a few elements of magical realism and snarky narrative to approach several issues that older middle school students may be experiencing. Overall, a relatively easy read that definitely is relevant to students struggling with their sexuality and/or family problems.
