Told from the perspective of twelve-year-old Annie, this book tracks her thoughts and observations as she works through changes with her family and best friend, Max. For Annie, running for the pleasure of running is one constant in a year of changes. Understanding and accepting the rhythms of life is a learning process that Annie begins in this year.

Written in verse, this is a quick and fun read for anyone who enjoys or appreciates the perspective of someone else as they figure out where they stand in their relationships and in life.

This novel by Sharon Creech follows Sophie, a thirteen year old orphan, on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean on a small sailboat – crewed by her three uncles and two cousins. It is a suspenseful and interesting book about fitting in, dealing with the past, and finding one’s place in the world.

The story is told through Sophie’s diary, and through her cousin Cody’s diary, so it is interesting for both boys and girls. I think anyone would enjoy this well-written and thoughtful book.

Jack does not want to write poetry. But his teacher won’t let that be an excuse. Love That Dog is a collection of free verse poetry written in the form of Jack’s journal, where he gains confidence in his writing and comes to love poetry.

Since this story is told from the perspective of a young poet, it would be a perfect way to introduce our students to poetry.  Jack also mentions many other poems as he struggles to interpret them, which can be found at the end of the book for reference.
