Hà is a ten year old, refugee from Saigon, Vietnam. Hà and her family make a desperate decision to leave their beloved home in Saigon with the hopes that her father will return after mysteriously disappearing in the war. Hà, her mother, and her four brothers take a leap of faith and escape to the United States where they find a sponsor from Alabama and discovers the foreign world of Alabama in 1975. Hà has to get used to the strange food, bullies at school, and strength of her own family.

This story is told in a series of short poems but gives an in-depth illustration of what a family feels like when escaping war.

Quebrado is a young man of Taino Indian and Spanish ancestry. He is a slave to Bernardino de Talavera, a Caribbean pirate, who wishes to conquer the Caribbean isles and searches for vulnerable islanders to capture and sell. When a hurricane hits the ship, Quebrado escapes the dangerous waters and finds refuge in a small village. Quebrado befriends two young lovers, learns how to navigate his past and present, and decides the fate of his former captors.

This is a very short book. This story is fictional but based on historical references of the Caribbean history but told in series of short poems.

A book about Esperanza, young girl from Chicago, growing up in harsh surroundings. The story tells of her beautiful struggles and lifelike problems that translate to any reader.

This book worked well when taught to my six grade Latino class. The writing is chock full of great writing that students can pick up on.

Jack does not want to write poetry. But his teacher won’t let that be an excuse. Love That Dog is a collection of free verse poetry written in the form of Jack’s journal, where he gains confidence in his writing and comes to love poetry.

Since this story is told from the perspective of a young poet, it would be a perfect way to introduce our students to poetry.  Jack also mentions many other poems as he struggles to interpret them, which can be found at the end of the book for reference.
