Just how scary are these tales of horror? They are so frightening that this is one of the most often banned or challenged books in the country! This edition collects all three of the original Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books in one place. In these classic tales, perfect for reading out loud over a campfire or just creeping yourself out at night, you will encounter ghosts, living scarecrows, haunted houses, evil animals, escaped murderers, invasive insects, and sinister strangers. Balancing out the horror, many of the stories have a lot of humor too!

This is a perfect book for the horror lover. Many of the tales and images haunt me to this day. After I first read these stories as a kid, I was scared to even open the book again! My favorite story is “Harold”. A warning: the Scary Stories series has recently been republished with new illustrations by Brett Helquist. The original drawings by Stephen Gammell are far better and much scarier. Make sure to pick up a copy of the books with Gammell’s illustrations!

The main character, Jack, son of the infamous Jack and the Bean Stalk, lives in the fairy tale world. Trying to restore his family’s reputation, he embarks on an adventure with a princess name May. May, however isn’t a princess, she is from our world. Together with Jack, they both adventured on this crazy and wild fairy tale land.

This book is fun and hilarious, I know every one will enjoy it. For City of Lakes AmeriCorps members, it’ll bring back childhood memories and for middle school students, it’ll help them realized how fun it is to be young and full of energy.

Book 4 of 5

In the fourth summer of the sisterhood, each girl has new experiences. They have only phone calls, e-mails, and the Traveling Pants to tie them together, until Lena’s sister loses the Pants in Greece. The crisis brings them all together. They finally realize that the Pants are not really important.

This is another great installment in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. I would recommend it to anyone– but it’s probably best to have read the other books or at least seen the film first.

LaVaughn is fifteen now, and she’s still fiercely determined to go to college. But that’s the only thing she’s sure about. Loyalty to her father bubbles up as her mother grows closer to a new man. The two girls she used to do everything with have chosen a path LaVaughn wants no part of. And then there’s Jody. LaVaughn can’t believe how gorgeous he is…or how confusing. He acts like he’s in love with her, but is he?

I would recommend this book to anyone who has trouble making decisions. Readers get to experience the kind of decisions other people have to make in their lives.

Everyone is afraid of something! Four young teens have fears they cannot conquer. Their parents are sending them to the “School of Fear,” in hopes they can overcome their fears. Will they or will they not? Read the book to find out!

I know many middle school students will like this book because they can definitely relate to at least one of the characters in the book. I also think COL members will like it too.

The first book of Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, this is a fun and exciting adventure centred around the abbey of Redwall and its surrounding forests. Matthias is the main character, and the reader follows him on his quest to save the abbey and the residents of the forest from an invading army of evil rats and other unsavory creatures. Filled with mystery, intrigue, and emotion, this book and series is definitely worth a read.

Anyone who likes animals will enjoy this book, as will anyone with an interest in fantasy.
